The OD-3 is (IMO) the evolution of the BD-2 to fix its (sometimes numerous) shortcomings. There are a bunch of ways you could go, but these are pedals I'd try listening to clips of and try to play as many as you can before you buy if money is an issue.Ĭlick to expand.In stock form, I absolutely agree that the OD-3 simply trumps the BD-2, IMO. Way Huge Pork Loin (or just try all of their stuff) I like mine at higher gain settings, but it has the ability to be much cleaner. Fulltone Full Drive or Plimsoul (The Plimsoul does a better cleanish bluesy sound than my Dano CTO-1, in my opinion.) TS-9 or TS-808 or their clones (Way Huge Green Rhino, Visual Sound Route 808, Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive) Maybe look at the Garage Tone Overdrive?
I agree about the MXR Classic Overdrive. BBE Green Screamer (also a TS clone and on sale at some GCs right now)
OD-3 (A cool pedal, but I disagree that it's categorically better than the BD2) EDIT: My mistake. SD-1 (more of a classic rock sound, but I like them. Usual suspects for your needs might include: Keep the Dano, I think it's a good pedal, and it's true bypass with a metal casing and jacks. Or one of the classic inexpensive FUzz Face copies. Or you could go even heavier into a Fuzz.
They get good reviews and the demos I've seen sound awesome. If you're looking for a bit more dirt, look at the new MXR 78 Badass or the 77 Modified Overdrive. It has put a serious hurting on my restraint. I have played through a few folks Blues Drivers recently and I like them a lot. They both also have a switch inside that can switch it over to the Zakk Wilde Overdrive which takes some of the mid-hump out. It seems to have a touch, just a touch, more clarity than the Ibanez 808 of my buddy's and the Bad Monkey I had. then recently came across the Guitar Center (US) exclusive Classic Overdrive (they can usually be had on ebay) but it is the MXR GT-OD. I've tried a couple, a TS-9, Modded it to 808 specs, the Bad Monkey, I think one or two others. I have never cared for the Tubescreamer type tone. It's got a bit more drive to it than the TOD. Who Knows?Īnother Dano pedal to check out might be the Cool Cat Drive. Different amps, several years separation. It didn't sound as good as the last one I had tried.
I recently tried a Bad Monkey and was a little disappointed. I have a Dano TOD and like it a lot as well. What amp are you going into? This might make a bit of a difference.
